What’s at Matarangi?
The Matarangi is set on the harbours edge with a 3km walk way that winds its way about the spit of Matarangi at your door step. This peaceful and calming environment not only offers wonderful views, but the opportunity to view several types of bird life and unspoiled scenery.
A 4 minute stroll away is The Dunes golf club, originally designed by Sir Bob Charles. Now extended to an 18 hole course with fabulous sea and harbour views, this course offers the ultimate golfing experience.
A great afternoon’s entertainment maybe a game of lawn bowls, then you can relax in the bar/restaurant with both indoor and outdoor dinning.
The wharf & boat ramp are a few minutes walk away, and a place to watch the spectacular sunsets.
There is a small bay for picnics while you watch a variety of water sports, or bring a fishing rod & try your own luck off the wharf.
Alternatively, head down to the beautiful white sand, gentle surf beach on the northern side of the spit, that stretches 4.5km. A stunning beach for relaxing, swimming, or walking.
For those wishing to enjoy Matarangi by cycling, the paths and cycleways are mostly flat and you can enjoy the scenery leisurely whilst getting great exercise at the same time.
Local shops include a Four Square, Cafe & Bar, Liquor Outlet and gift shop.
Explore the Coromandel
The Matarangi is located only 30 minutes from Whitianga & 20 minutes from Coromandel town making it a great, convenient location to visit all the must do experiences in the region.
Places of interest include the well- known New Chums Beach that can only be accessed from Whangapoua. Other stunning beaches to explore are Rings Beach, Kuaotunu, Otama Bay and Opito Bay.
Other places of interest are the famous Lukes Kitchen at Kuaotunu situated 10 mins from Matarangi where the locals met to treat themselves to good food and local brews.
For those wishing to travel a bit further you can either drive to Cathedral cove near Hahei , or alternatively take a boat from Whitianga. Hot Water Beach is approximately 50 minutes drive and definitely worth a visit.
